Fort Beavers Korea

44TH Engineers

Recollections:
Hi George

I spoke with you last summer when my husband and I were getting ready to go to Korea.  He was with the 44th Engr's and built a bridge called the half and half bridge.

I wanted to let you know that we did go and there have been a number of changes.  The town of tae jon ni is now Dae Jon Ni.  The map coordinates that are on your website are now an elementary school in the town.  The town is still a small farming type of community.

We were very lucky as our guide found a town elder's daughter and she and her husband drove around the area to find the bridge.  We found the Babicz bridge first.  It is still there and they have built another bridge next to it to make it four laned.

We also found where the half and half bridge was.  It was destroyed by a flood in 1998 but the original abuttments are still visible.  They are building a new bridge there.  The GPS coordinates for the new bridge are 127 4 41.0 East and 38 0 18.0 North.

I have a number of pictures if you would like me to send them to you.  My husband was amazed at the growth of trees etc in the area.  It looks nothing like what it was when you all served there.

Greetings:

I was glad to find your site on the web. I was stationed in Korea (With the 44th Engineer Bn. construction and AFKN)

I have some pictures from my tour of duty, mostly with AFKN in Munsan...however, when I was first in country (in-processed at ASCOM City) I remember very well the ride on the Army Bus to Fort Beavers where I was assigned with the Engineers.  The 44th Engineer Battalion (Construction) is the name of the unit mentioned on your site.  The 44th had one company at Beavers year round, but the home base was at Camp Carroll near Waegwan.  In the winter, the Battalion went down South to Camp Carroll.  So, I was stationed at Fort Beavers from about Labor Day 1967 until after Thanksgiving the same year. I remember the post very well, even today and was glad to see the pictures on your site.

I later transferred to AFKN Radio Tomahawk, but did pay a visit to the Fort Beavers area in the Fall of 1968 and visited Camp Casey as well, while with AFKN.  By the way, the AFKN Playlist you display is the one I programmed (small world) as I was the program director and morning dj on Radio Tomahawk. Somewhere, I have the originals.

By the way, I visited Korea in 1984....but so much has changed.  The only thing I saw from Seoul to Pusan that had not changed was the train station in Seoul. Now, I am told that too, has been renovated.  I did not go north to any army bases, as I figured it would ruin the memories...Thought you'd like the info on identity of the Engineer Battalion at Fort Beavers.  Thanks for posting your site.
